Kine Weekly told you “The latest strong ‘crooks slide out’ try peopled with a colorful variety of essential and you will arresting letters, and these, skilfully manipulated because of the journalist and you can manager, allow the movie to help you tread drinking water effectively. It is simply on wind up this starts to falter, nevertheless slap-up finale rescues they throughout the ‘red’. Wonderfully staged and you can wisely dialogued, it has no higher problem in the life style off their incredibly ugly title.” [ 8 ]

Month-to-month Movie Bulletin said “The movie moves within a quick speed, brand new dialogue is smooth and characterisations generally effective. Knob Powell and you can Evelyn Keyes lead the brand new shed expertly, while the investigator is enjoyed big aplomb by the that individual identification, Lee J. Cobb.” [ 9 ]

The fresh new film’s writer and movie director, Robert Rossen, creates good multidimensional chess video game, to own mortal bet, ranging from Johnny, their company (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s wife (Ellen Received), a cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and a good scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whoever sibling (Nina Foch) worked in the local casino and you can dated a great corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). New caustically epigrammatic software, the latest cast’s suavely regulated body language off love and you may risk, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you may smartly cocky pictures (including their governmental conscience) get this to pugnacious yet detailed spectacle an invisible vintage of one’s style.” [ 10 ]

Its mainly a question of viewing Mr. Powell experience his paces smartly if you are an enormous cast away from stars and you can stars bring your typical help. Evelyn Keyes performs the favorable absolutely nothing woman exactly who brings out the newest finest in your and you can Ellen Drew is the sleek and you will slinky vixen whom will get him into the jams. Thomas Gomez is fatty once the villain and Lee J. Cobb does a different sort of in a position concert tour just like the a weary police inspector exactly who fundamentally closes the actual situation. A great deal of drinking and smoking is carried out by the the concerned.” [ twelve ]
